This is a good post but we've been here before and this is a question that depends on what era you grew up in. I'm down with Rakim and the boys know I like KRS1 but I'm like big Daddy Kane for my rapper, just off the top of my head.. Let's see where this goes before I go any further.

I'd have to pick KRS first, then Rakim.

hard to stay, i think u gotta look at consistancy over time... then are u looking at overall hits or lyrics vs beats? i leave it to you pros... i just dont have the knowledge compared to most of u guys or the time to catch up lol

My bad i should say in the 80's era.....and my bad for leaving out Big daddy Kane. But still if any real hip hop head would tell you off top is rakim because of the lyrics he put out and unlike the rappers of today....it make sense unlike Lil wayne.

everytime CHUCK D is on the mic hes spittin raw lyrics.  he was just so bold and confident in his rhymes, and in my opinion is the best rapper of all time (all-time meaning the 80's era in this case)

ok... I'll say it again... Hopefully it will be the last time........LL Cool J is hard as hell, battle anybody I don't care who you tell, I excel, they all "FAIL".... Just my $.02... name another mc that has some type of appeal after more that 20 years of "RECORDING" music. Every MC has their own style..but who is more versatile....Longevity is the key....Damn even the great RUN DMC (and I love them)fell off way before LL did....... I love all old school MC's don't get me wrong... Love KANE also, great MC, but he fell off real quick....but how could anyone not mention James Todd Smith.......Da G.O.A.T.  ...... SMOOOV

I'm with you again here smooov, But let's not forget will smith as far as the longevity is concerned. Ive liked him since they came out. and for him to stay around through all these years means something to me, not to mention he can still kick the rhymes without cursing and make a Bomb hit with it..I'm down with the Kane but like you said he fell off, as did most of the GREAT ones of the day. So i have to look at longevity. and style..

I gotta give it to Rakim. cuz he changed the game.  Never heard of ANYONE wanting to battle him.  KRS-ONE is a strong second.  But, and this is only MY opinion,  Ya gotta rank Grand Puba up there also.  Neva heard anyone wanting to battle him either.  And because I was there in '78 for the Philly vs New York battle,  KOOL MOE DEE has to be ranked, because his style at that time, in the pioneering days, could not be touched.  Tied with Kool Moe Dee is Prince Whipper Whip.

I respect all the old school rappers. As a matter of fact I love them. That being said some of them fall short in certain categories. I like KRS One, his first two albums were classics but that Edutainment album was weak at best. The lyrics were good but on most of the tracks his production was wack! The sex and violence album is a classic but his following albums were good with a couple leaving something to be desired. He is one of the best when it comes to moving the crowd. Rakim made better albums with dope lyrics and beats but didn't have the longevity that KRS had. I think you have to rank the best rappers by eras. Early eighties, I have to say Melle Mel. Mid eighties to early nineties [1]Rakim, [2]LL*, [3] KRS, [4] Chuck D, [5] Kane. Mid nineties and beyond [1] Jay-Z, [2] Pac*, [3] Biggie*, [4] Nas, [5] Eminem. Out of all them, I think Jay-Z is the best that ever did it and still does it! He has the work ethic of Pac, the cool of Cool J and bravado of Biggie Smalls! Allthough someone will take his crown someday in the future.

*Could be the best ever given the wright time and circumstances

you know what? my bad on leaving out other great m.c's like ll cool j. HE been and still going strong in the rap game.Hell he been with def jam for so long.....why he not ceo of def jams instead of jay-z? Plus he also have beef with jay-z saying he dont feel it's right going against competition( jay-z) and that his cd won't get the right publicity that it deserve.

Yo, first of all, big up's to to Donditti for mentioning Prince Whipper Whip (the jive talker, the night stalker...). 2nd of all, I respect his acting, and I consider a touch of jazz to be a hip-hop classic, but the best rapper of all time? Will Smith's name shouldn't even come up....

O.K, let me kick it like this: what is "best"? Is it longevity? Creativity? Record sales? Style? Flow? Lyrical content?

I think that there are probably different winners for each catagory, but let's be real, there can only be one overall winner, and that is the legend in leather....

That being said, let me list some guys with the dopest flows...Treach(naughty by nature) Chubb Rock, tha' R......(I got more, but sometimes I post too much........)

Now see, I was gonna chill til after Christmas but you done gone and dissed my boy Will. You Know that I'm old like the best of them and I KNOW my stuff!! and I ALWAYS give props where PROPS is due and Will IS DUE his props. I DIDN'T However say that He was the greatest.. But you gotta agree with me as far as all of the catagories His name will fit.. think about it for a minute.

Ok with that said and now that you've had a min to THINK old man, let's Pull out the Guns... My opinion, there are alot of greats, from Kane, to Rakim, to Mo Dee, to I guess, Biggie and Pac( for All you 90's babies), But I look at greatness in ALL the catagories wrapped in one. and with that I gotta give it to the GOAT for Doing in as long as he has in spite of the years and all the change that's taken place in Hip Hop.. WE all know that Hip Hop is DEAD as WE know it but The L.L. Is still doin, and Doin AND doin it well...

Like He said " Don't call it a comeback, He's been here for YEARS"!!

How you gonna call my man out S? Don't make me get Old on you....

Having met the man in '97 where he dpit for me in my car as I took him home, I have to let  you know that while I still feel my previous posting is accurate for ME,  I now believe that the best rapper/lyricist of this era (1997 until today) has to be the poet Black Ice on Def Jam Poetry.  Don't get it twisted and think that I'm just swinging on him cus he's from Philly and so am I.  Proof is in the puddin'.  Just punch up Black Ice on youtube.coma nd check his flow.  the freestyle he did on Rap City to Jay-Z's "Show Me What You Got" is the best lyrical performance I've seen or heard in years!

Yay! my first post here. Let me just say, to get it off my chest, that Pac never moved me. there, I know I'm going to get alot of heat for it, so be it.Biggie was tight, yes, but not the best, and I agree with a friend of mine's GF who said Jay looks/sounds like he has autism,"uh huh-uh huh".now I can move on in my life

My fave of all time (I was raised in the golden era of Hip Hop);

Chuck D (his voice gets yr attention)

Big Daddy Kane (nuff said)

Slick Rick (great style and posture to match)

Rakim (need I say more)

I knew a guy back in the day who listened to my "Follow The Leader" cd and told me Rakim was lyrically challenged. This was coming from someone who idolized Em, and wanted to be a "rapper" ( I use that instead of MC) after that, his opinion didn't matter to me at all.

MELLE MEL could very well steal this title - and even more so becuase he was one of the first to ever do it properly.

Go and listen to the freestyle on steinski's "burning out of control mix", and i'm sure you will come around

you will agree

although if im talking about my current favourite emcee, i def have to put thes one from people under the stairs up there as a close number one. not only is he one of the best beat makers EVER he kills it on the mic and keeps it so different, original and flowing.

Yo DJ SOS,

SHA ROCK for sure, but thats a hard one, she is followed VERY closley by the sequence chicks, they own shit as a group, and no gals could mess with them, they pioneered shit!!!

I was just posting about sha rock in another forum, someone was prooping femals and talked about mc lyte, i said if ur propping female emcees u def have to give the BIGGEST SHOUT to SHA ROCK, she was only 16 yrs old when the funky four were rocking parties till dawn!!!

Thats the old school covered, lets talk about current, or more new school female emcees.

Has anyone heard UTD ( Urban thermo Dynamics ), thats Mos Def's first group with his bro
( DCQ )and sister ( CES ). Ces is absolute killer on every track on this album, and is prob the standout of the whole album, unbelievable flow, no chick can mess with her. if u dont believ me go and check this album, and if u havent heard it go and get it anyway, one of my FAV albums of all time, all beats done by Diamond and Showbiz, so u know its all gonna be some HOT SHIT!!!
