Well..other than the obvious New York and L.A....which actually "paved" the road while others followed and just drove down it, then corporate america peeped the potential, and went and just bought the damn road...now where we gonna drive...... oh wait..on OldSchoollive.com.... that's where....... long live King Tim III.....
This question could go alot of ways because people could say that alot of cities paved the way, like ATL, chicago, Va beach(depending on who you ask) and some of the midwest cities. I think you'd get alot of different answers to this question based on who yuo ask and where they're from and what time frame they lived in..I'm curious to see some of the answers to this one myself..
Me personally, I think NYC paved a BIG WAY for ALL of Hip-hop, but i KNOW that somebody will give me Beef on that one.(LA heads), but Do the research.. yuo'll see..

First of all, being from L.A., it might surprise y'all to hear me say that NYC is really the only city that can be said to "pave the way".
Back in the day, all a brother had to do was say that he was from NYC, and he got mad props...
NYC was like a really good show, and all of the later contributions from other cities were like spinoffs....
True, L.A. did break out with "Gangsta Rap" (should we really be proud of that?) But, it was only after years of learning the culture from NYC. I'm gonna get more into this when I reply to the "Hip-Hop time line post.
One thing that we left coasters can be proud of is how we invented "Techno-Hop"; But, again, all we really did was build on the foundation of Planet Rock, which of course came out of NYC.(via Germany-props to Kraftwerk) All in all, we ALL gotta give it up to NYC.
Glad to see another oldhead givin props where props is do.. I think you're right. NYC did pave the way and everbody else just built on that platform..
L.A, you get props for gangsta rap, but that's about it from me, because I think that started alot of the true violence that's been highlighted in all the gangsta rap that's comin out. the whole Biggie/tupac beef was just too much.. so that's about all i can give you guys..

Hard rock, commercial RnB, Newskool " rap ", Techno, Jazz, Blues,
Japanese music ( J pop, J rock ), Disco, Funk, Dance, Drum n Bass, ragga and Oldschool.
I was fond of it all ! But at this time my favorite is Oldschool and I know this is my style, I never wanna change it. On second position, I like the Funk and on third Drum n bass.
I never heard a better song than the oldschool song and I wouldn't like the newskool still the oldschool style to the oldschoolers because in the 80s hip hop was fun, funky, and cool. Now it's nothing, it's just commercial black music. But the worst is Tecno because it's bad and when it's a bit good, it' oldschool remix. I prefer the original, I prefer the oldschool.
yeah but algo, what cities paved the way for hip hop to make it to Paris? Besides NYC and LA what cities are the reason that people in Paris even HEARD of hip hop?

what about Sir Mix A Lot pre- baby got back? He put seattle on the map, with posse 's on broadway, beepers,my hooptie, buttermilk biscuits,swass,etc... it was all downhill after baby got back. and to top it off, Seattle nowadays has small hip hop community that holds on to the culture of graffitti, b-boying, and tight MC'ing.
Truth be told, I don't think there ARE any other cities that "PAVED THE WAY" for hip hop, Now, if you wanna change the questions to what are some of the cities that killed Hip hop as we know it today, then I think you could name a ton of them. which Is why we say TRUE HIP HOP IS DEAD other than on OSL!!
