Chuckie C.. Why??? Because He could "Move the crowd"..LOL, But on the real, I'm on the jazzy jeff, kid capri, red Alert, chuck chillout, there's just too many to name.. each one has a style that's off the chain.. But if you can flow like most of the guys i named and some i didn't then you are the man in my book..

J-A-Y are the letters of his name, cuttin' and scratchin' are the aspects of his game..........
Anyone who ever saw RUNDMC live can attest to the fact that they were off of the meter. It was'nt just the rhymes, it was mostly Jam Master Jay. It might have been Run's house, but it was definately Jay's stage. Jay NEVER used samples, replay devices or any other type of playback machines, it was all live, all Jay, all the time.
When it comes to DJs from groups, I would take Jazzy Jeff over JMJ any day...
Don't get me wrong, Jay was dope and a very integral part of the Run DMC live show, but his skills (as far as scratching etc) were a little rudimentary. Jeff, on the other hand, was miles ahead in the skills department...
I never saw Rodney O live, but I would imagine Joe Cooley was probably the Jazzy Jeff of the West...him or Alladdin.
YO!!! What you know about Rodney O and Joe Cooley? Man, I must have seen those guys a couple of hundred times back in the day.
I guess the whole who's the best thing is kind of subjective. The only think that I can say about "skills" is, if you wan't to allow for turntable-ism, then you have to bring up quys like q-bert... I don't know, I just don't feel like those kinda guys are "real" dj's...
Don't get me wrong, Jazzy Jeff IS dope ('a touch of jazz is my favorite insrumental. period), I just like Jay better.
No Not really..I was just thinking about the question.. and the whole picture here. even now..there are a ton of greats but I think He's been holdin it down with his for a long time.. Think about D.J. Jeff's got it... He's held his own in and out of battles and still hangin...
Listen to any cut by him and the prince and Jeff gets down.. His cutting and TRANSFORMING skillz are off the hook...that brother got mad Hands..No disrespect to the other greats but jeff's my man..Even better than me..

OK, I'm feelin GMF, But where is he now? He had skillz too, but lets look again at the skillz, jeff's got some wicked hands.. you can't know that or match that up with anydody. I even say kid capri in a show and i still say jeff is smoov with his..I'm listening to brand new funk by fresh prince and jeff's got it going..

Like you said, SOS, trying to name the greatest DJ is something very subjective...
People could argue for months about it.
Kool Herc? The Godfather of Hip Hop, but not much of a mixing DJ.
Theodore? He's credited with the creation of the scratch, but he's no Qbert.
Qbert? One of the greatest scratchers alive, but pure scratch tracks get old after about 35 seconds.
I mean, all the big names out there are known for this-or-that, but it's hard to find one who is truly well-rounded with everything...
Not the GOAT by any means, but someone who meets the criteria of party rocking, scratching, trick mixing and overall cleanliness in my book is the Beat Junkies' J-Rocc.
I like this answer but you can't tell me that jeff doesn't have all that as well..not to mention the longevity to boot..I like how you broke the guys down and I agree, but the GOAT?? jeff's got him..in my book..

Notice I said JRocc's not the GOAT by any means...
Hear me out, though, as much respect as Jeff and all the others deserve, many times they just ride off their name and the history behind that name and tend to get a little lazy when performing live. I've some on-air mixes from Jeff that are a bit rushed and, as much as I hate to say it, sloppy. I've yet to hear a sloppy live set from JRocc...
Is it right to compare JRocc to Jeff? I think in this instance, it is.
Also, going back to what SOS (I believe) said previously about Qbert. To say you don't consider him a "real" DJ is a serious slight on dude. Q's not a newcomer by any stretch of the imagination. Like us, he cut his chops as a mobile in the early/mid 80s - he's just happened to find his niche with scratching and he's stuck with it. I've dealt with Q on a couple of occasions (as far as trading records etc) and dude has mad knowledge about hiphop history (not just DJ'ing) and a vinyl collection to back it up...
I'm sure jroc has had some sloppy times whether we've heard them or not. show me a true dj that hasn't and i show you a FAKE dj..But going back to the all around skillz, you gotta admit jeff's got it.. the scratch, transform(off the hook), battlin, etc. here's there..I ain't knocking Q or jroc, this is just my opinion...for the overall Dj he's my man..I don't need tricks or flash, just roc a party or stage and keep it flowing....that's jeff..

I definitely feel ya on the whole turntablism thing. I was into that scene for about 3 or 4 years in the late 90s and, believe me, it's maaaad boring (to me). I mean, it started off nice (especially with what the Xecutioners were doing at that time) - everybody was looking to make things funky and soulful. Then, it got to a point where everyone was so focused on technicality that it became unlistenable. The musicality got lost in the whole competition to outdo the next man...
Many of the cats who were big on the scene back in the 90's have moved back to their roots of mixing and party-rocking...and they all say they are happy with DJ'ing again...

True, indeed! Good point...good point.
Don't get me wrong, Jeff is one of my biggest influences from back in the day...when I first heard the 'Live At Union Square' track and he introduced the transform, I went nuts! I ended up with callouses on my fingers trying to learn it on my Radio Shack mixer's line switches (which was considered cheating back in the day haha)...

LMAO!!! I did the same shit!

HAHAHAHA! Those hard callouses on your thumb and forefinger...
I had them too...Toooo funny..He don't know what he started with that....I thinkl the greatest invention was the switch, ot nowadays it's digitally done if you have a fast processor you can get away with it..cheaters.....LOL but i miss those days..i wonder of radio shack still makes those generic mixers..I'll bet somebody still has one...collectors item.....

I actually have one of those Realistic mixers - the one with the crossfader that clicked in the middle - here in the overhead of my desk at work...I brought it in to show somebody and forgot to take it home...
If you wanna check jeff out in nice form check out pump me up on will smith's cd. Jeff is on that go-go joint..
What's this, you say???
Chuckie knows how to get my attention hahaha - I'ma have to go check for this one this weekend!
Those Philly DJ's and go-go...Cash Money (under 'Dr. Funkenstein') did a whole 12" called 'Scratchin To The Funk' back in the day where he's cutting up all go-go.
kid capri did a bangin jog of that when I saw him battle spinderelle at a concert in greensboro NC years ago and he was on point..But Jeff is the man on that cut .. Yeah you gotta check it out.. get at me when you do....
