I was just reading Smooves post regarding house parties, and he was right.

Back in the day, we all wanted to be Kurtis Blow, Big Bank Hank or Melle Mel: They were like rock stars, but, unlike rock stars, you be like them, if you could rhyme, all you needed was a mic and an instrumental version, and it was on. Don't get me wrong, this isn't one of those old school rocks/new school sucks rants, because we need to realize one thing, just like Smoove pointed out about todays rappers lying and beeing "studio gansters", we must acknowledge that old schoolers lied too. A lot. Just listen to the old jams-Busy B. NEVER owned a mansion or a yacht, Big Bank Hank had NO bank, etc.

The point I'm trying to make is this; Rap originated as somthing that was attainable, somthing that you could do, if you put your mind to it-then came videos-and costumes(remember how the furious 5 used to look?) Suddenly, rappers were these characters that we not only couldn't be, but didn't want to be.

Enter RUNDMC. Now, rappers were rapping about skills, issues and wearing LEE's.

Once again, we could all do it.

So, what does rap need? Rap needs someone without a platnum grill to release a record that makes NO mention of Escalades, Lex's, VIP honey's, having thier own label, etc.

Y'now, somthing that rhymes, somthing that rocks...

Thanks OD, I feel ya on that one. Thats why I like the skills and rhymes of Wil Smith. I like his style. He keeps it real without the parental advisory sticker and he's not into flashing. Rap ain't about Rap anymore, it's about what I got or who I'm doing...Thank God for oldschool Junkies like us to keep it going..

RE: What rap needs - PUTS

I think the answer to your dilemma is simply PUTS my friend.

PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS

You perfectly described them right there, they rock fat ryhmes and there is never a mention of Lexi's, Escalades or VIP Honeys. Just real stories from hip hop lives. And on top of all that every beat is a killer, never a wack beat from PUTS. Plus they do everything themsleves, right down to recording and mastering in their own studios...
Thes one is one of the best beat makers ever, have u heard thes's new solo project.
Its called "Lifestyle Marketing" and its dope. The whole album is thes one remixing old 70's and 80's commercials from this one guy, Herb Philofer or something alone the lines of that.

If anyone out there hasn't heard of People Under The Stiars definitely go and get onto the stuff cos they keep it realer than anybody.
Any release of there's is solid, doesnt matter what you get it will be gold!!

just listen to jeru the damaja's "ya playin ya'self"

i just pulled my tape out from storage the other day, lovin this song more than I did back then.

I think hip hop needs the creative/artistic element back. Mind you, there are a lot of artists out right now who do represent hip hop (planet asia, PUTS, deltron, papoose, etc..) but industry is dictating what should be heard and admired. Like I wrote on another hiphop site about half a dollar "like a friend nobody likes, just ignore him and maybe he'll go away" maybe that's what we all need to do, ignore it and the industry will listen.

I do think just like SOS. smile.gif
rap needs to be funky, fast, hard .... hmm.gif
today, it's just slow,weak and powerless. bleh.gif
oldschool rap = rock n roll
rap needs the rock n roll energy, a positive energy, an oldschooler to put the hip hop head and make it great like it was in the passed. aww.gif
rap just need to get a little back to his origins: rock n roll. blankstare.gif

Rap music need a little thought, these guys walk into he studio lay some tracks down and calls it a day. A real artist is involved in their music. Pre/Post the whole package. Rap can be some muh bigger with a little thought but I guess that would make it Hip Hop.
