I just want to get your feed back on this one.

I've seen the wave of dj's hitting the scene with cd turntables and I have to ask, CD or wax? I personally think that if you have a digital readout that can tell you where to cue up your mix it's alot easier than listening and remember where your cue is on an album. What's your take on this? What do you think about these "dj's" that get down to cd's vs vinyl? what do you prefer?

I know it takes skillz to rock them both but I'm oldschool so Vinyl would be my weapon of choice just because i think it takes more skillz to rock them than it does cd's. but that me, like I said, I'm Oldschool..

Turntables baby... Vinyl... Which in my opinion, gives you the most control.


BUT... When I get enough money together, I will be adding this:

UnEq, check out Serato...
Serato has pretty much become the industry standard on that end of things. Final Scratch is dead...


Back to the topic at hand -
I'm all about vinyl. I'm trying to get my hands on a CDJ for studio use, though...

So, tdawg.... Looking at this diagram of Serato:



...it looks like the same idea as final scratch.


what's the difference? What's "dead" about Final Scratch?


(I'm not debating, I really wanna know! I'm an old school DJ.. I never wanted to give this Hi-Tech stuff a chance till now - so I don't know much about it)

Dude, I can only dream of a setup like that.. I wish i had the money and the time to get into it like that. I guess i'm just content on keeping the collection going and ALIVE. If you ever need my help with anything though holla at me..

I'm with you on this one, I never new it would get this High Tech either, but i'd love to play with it some if i ever could.. it does look similar to final scratch though.. What's the diff?

Whoa.... that's a long way from 2 technics sl-b1's, and a gemini crossfading mixer.....but back on the subject... "give me vinyl till it's final" ...get it....for those who don't it means till I die..

Yeah Smooov, what ever happened to two turntables and a mic? I guess that's oldschool too.. Big Ups to Technics 1200's and my old Sure Mic. and my numark mixer.. dinasors..

If I still played out every weekend, I would most definitely invest in a laptop and Serato. Having crates upon crates on a laptop's harddrive is definitely a back saver Since I only play out once a month - if that - it's just not worth it to me. Plus, I would never have the patience to sit there and upload all my vinyl. With 5000 some records, it would take my lazy ass years!!!


One advantage Serato has given me, though, is the fact that a lot of people are getting rid of their vinyl once they have it uploaded to their harddrive. It's keeping my diggin' spots filled with some definite heat!

Nah, man!!!
The last time I updated my studio was back in '98 when I bought my 05LTD mixer. Besides that, it's still diggin' every weekend and coming home to the 1200's I've had for almost 20 years...


Serato's just not worth it for me.  I still use vinyl and don't plan on ever getting rid of it, so there's no need for anything else.

Regarding wax-NOTHING beats the sound of a brand new l.p., played on an audiophile turntble...After that, however, wax loses out to cd's....


Your average cd sounds better, last's longer and is easier to carry around. As far as final scratch, serratto, fruity loops, acid, reason,etc.....


A DJ's knowledge of jams, and the ability know which part of what jam at a given time(while keeping his eyes on the pulse of the crowd) is what REALLY makes a dj, and software will NEVER emulate that.

Although I don't use Serato or Final Scratch, I can say that it by no means creates an edge for the user - as far as skills go. It's still turntables and vinyl (control records), it's just that your crates are on a laptop. That being said, I guess there is ONE advantage: you don't have to change records.
But, if you can't mix or don't know your music, in general, it's not gonna help you in any way. You're not gonna be able to instantly mix, scratch or what-have-you.


I used it once before in my man's studio and I'm not gonna lie, it's sweet. One problem I noticed personally, though, was that I kept focusing on the monitor more than the turntables - for cue marks.


Like I said, there's no purpose for me to have it, but for those like Jazzy Jeff, Kid Capri and all the others who travel commercially to gigs, it's perfect. Infinite crates in your laptop. Plus, with all the horror stories I've heard of records coming up missing in baggage claim, I can definitely see it's merits.


Still, not for me, though...

Ok, so we agree that the only main Pro is that it cuts down on toting your crates around from gig to gig..I still say a dj that comes in with his crates gets MAd respect from me...

I WOULD SAY CD'S THEY ARE COMPACT AND THEY ARE EASY TO LOAD. UNLIKE WAX YOU CAN EASILE FIND A GROOVE OR CUE AND GET ON TIME MIX IN UNLIKE TURNTABLES.THEY ARE GOOD FOR SCRATCHING ON.....BUT I GOT A PROGRAM THAT CAN DO THAT.TURNTABLES ARE GOOD BUT IT'S TIME TO STEP THE GAME UP A A DJ THO.THEY STILL SELL RECORDS ON WAX? BESIDES CARRING ALL THEM CRATES IS KINDA THRU. I RATHER LOOK THUR THE CD CASE...IT'S MUCH LIGHTER AND PORTABLE....WATCH OUT!!!!!!...MP3 PLAYERS ARE TAKING OVA CD CHANGERS AND HOME STEREO SYSTEMS

Definitely vinyl,but not afraid to explore the digital side to only "cheat it" for the small house parties or family gatherings that will only require me to play "safe and typical" songs.


I noticed at least 7 years ago, that after buying my hip hop vinyl, taking them home and hearing how terrible they sounded . Then a friend told me that the digital to analog conversion was pretty much forgotten at that time (I.E - Vivrant Thing by Q-Tip). I stopped buying newer vinyl at that moment. I only buy classic Hip Hop and not the re-releases on vinyl. 


I gotta check out this Serato thing, and remember when people were rockin' DAT's?

Glad to see that somebody else didn't sell out to the newschool generation. i guess it's ok to "cheat" as you say, But let not forget where we came from and what made us who we are.. VINYL!!! baby!! for life.....

Definately vinyl is where it's at. It sounds better, you need more skills to rock em and it's just hot to walk around with milkcrates filled with hot vinyl.  Final Scratch is hot too - personally its my next step.

So tell me this. Should emcees carry around usb flash drives with their music on it and when they run into a DJ with Serato say here's the new joint download it from this portable storage drive?

Why not?

MCs have been running their shows from DATs and Instant Replay for years - there's no difference.
