What Do you think???????
Permalink Closed

I thougth about this when I was talking to one of my olehead buddies and I thought I'd throw it out to the Board..

What do you think of (Music wise) when you hear the term "Oldschool"? What style of music do you think of and what era do you thin of when it comes to mind> when someone says that they heard this "bangin Oldschool" radio station or song what do you instantly think about?

I think we sometimes Limit our thinking to one era and sound when we think of oldschool, for Us(35+), we usually think of Hip-hop when we think of oldschool, or "bac in the day" But truth be told, I still remember that Al green 8-track that we use to play in my single speaker, portable 8-track "boom Box", and when I got into music hard and started my dj thing, i really got into ALOT of music that was BANGIN and it wasn't just Hip hop, you'd be suprised what college kids were listening to back in the day.. I was shocked, when I Heard them Jammin to Alicia Meyers "I want to thank you" back then, not even thinking about what she was actually talking about.. I really Love it Now even more since I now know what she's talking about, and not to mention that the 12" is HOT!!, but that's just the stuff im talking about.. So let me know what YOU think..

well, when I think of "old school", I break it down a couple of ways...

To me, the term "old school", when used in the broadest sense, denotes a certain style, an era even. For example, I grew up in L.A., and if you went to a black persons house, and they had some collard greens growing in the backyard, pictures or busts of MLK, JFK and RFK in the house, had a pigeon coop (what y'all know about tumblers?) and served Kool Aid with every meal, then you knew that they were from the old school...

Before "gangsta rap" became popular, if you saw a cat wearing some sagging dickies, with a rag (blue/red) hanging out of one pocket, and some canvas gardening gloves hanging out of the other, you knew that he was from the old school. (actually, the correct term would be "O.G.")

A school is a place where you get your education from, a place that shapes your values, your way of seeing your world.....

So, what's  "old school" mean to me? It's the way that people of my ere/area DID things..Old school is wearing your skates(not roller blades) loose, with the toungues (covered with white fur)hanging to the side, couple skating to "you beat me to the punch" (note-you must skate behind the girl)

Old school is waking up early on saturday mornings, eating cereal and watching cartoons 'till about 10, going out to play, coming back for "Sooooouuuullllll Train", going back out, and coming back in to cap the night off with "the wonderful World of Disney"

Speaking of playing, old school is actually, physically "playing"...Y'know, hide n seek (later to be upgraded to hide n go get it) tag, freeze tag....

Old school is going to the matinee and seeng "the worlds greatest athelete". Now you see it, now you don't" Escape to witch Mountain", "that darn cat", "bedknobs and broomsticks"...Remember, there wouldn't be a parent in sight, just an entire theater FULL of kids, and no one got molested, kidnapped or stabbed....

Old school is playing caroms and participating in other ORGANISED ACTIVITIES during the summer at the local elementary school, while enjoying a free lunch...

Hell, summer school (free, voluntary) is old school...

Old school is catching the bus up to the fox hills mall (or the hawthorne) walking around all day, going to the arcade, buying a giant cookie (mrs. field's) getting a shirt/hat and getting an iron on transfer at the t-shirt store...

Speaking of arcades-Remember that football game that was like a table, and one team were"x's" and the other was "o's", and you had to roll a track ball to run? OLD SCHOOL!!!

Old school were the summer "science camps" at the museum of science and industry"

   Shucks, MUSEUMS are old school....

Old school was the way that atheletes used to play the majority of thier careers for one team; Bill Buckner, davey lopes, ron cey, steve garvey......Remember?

Old school was NO CABLE! NO INTERNET! (can you imagine.....)

Last, but not least, ALL (regardless of genre) of the music that made up the soundtrack of our lives, is OLD SCHOOL!!!!!

Ok Od, I see where you're going with this.. Like the electronic football game that was table top with the men that just vibrated around the metal field and I NEVER could figure out how to play it... But what I'm trying to figure out is the kinds of music that fit the "oldschool" label..I want to know if It all mainly applies to hip hop when talking to oldheads like us? (40+).. I'm alsking because when I go looking for and oldschool radio station someone usually breaks it ub into catagories and just gives me one genre. I want ALL OLDSCHOOL in ONE radio station....I LOVE ALL oldschool, which includes, R & B, Funk, Soul, pop, Some rock, etc...How come I can't get that in a radio station? I see where this is leading me.. Sorry OSL, I may have to break out and Bring one to the table.. I mean let's be Real, Back in the Day, we would Jam to ALOT of things besides hip hop.. I got down to Stevie wonder, marvin Gaye, Zapp, Cameo, etc.. So why can't I get that along with my Planet rock, or my hobo scratch? Why seperate the oldschool.. I want the R& B person to get their boogie on as well as the hip hop kid..That's whaT I miss about doing the dj thing, I loved to "move the CROWD! if you wanted to Roc a party, you'd better come prepared..I know you know what's it's like to loose a party crowd because they weren't feeling what you played.. Well that's how I feel about this radio thing, you loose me with the jams and I gotta switch channels to the other guys who is jammin my "other Song"...If you gota a Good Playlist, with Request line, you got the crowd, and the support.. Tell the truth Od, Don't you wish sometimes that UnEq had some other jams on OSL?? He's got the Bomb site to me right now, But I think doing a mad update to the playlist and request list could grab him some serious listeners..Man, the mix tapes that I could create!! But, I'll wait and see.. Thanks for going back Like you did..

Aight, Aight, I see what you mean...

And, yeah, I do agree, OLD SCHOOL means more than rap...Let me try to break it down a little..

Old School hip-hop- First, must remember that 'Hip-Hop" is a pretty broad term, encapulating everything from rap to electrofunk, disco, funk, punk, rnb,etc...What makes a song "Hip-Hop" is what the lyrics say, or what the song itself says(the vibe factor) How come nothing that micheal jackson ever did was considered "hip-hop"? It just wasn't, that's all...How come Gladys Knights "save the overtime for me" is a B-boy classic? Simply because she had b-boys in the video...Like I've said a million times, "ol school" rap is anything PRIOR to RUN-DMC.

Old school RNB-What can I say? I spend at least twice as much time listening to my old rnb jams than my rap jams.... So, what is old school as far as RNB? Remember, this is for the 40+ crowd...Float,float onnnnnn....Fantastic Voyage, I just want to be, sexy dancer, your'e the one for me, sombody else's guy, mama used to say, oooohhhhhh,so fine, knock on wood, shake your groove thang, jack and jill, groove line, sun is here, fire cracker, dazz, duzick, flashlight,......................................I could go on forever (just for fun, name the artist's that belong to the above songs.)

Old school slow jams-First off, let's get this straight-there is a big difference between a love song/ballad and a SLOW JAM Lionel Ritchie's (after he left the Commodores) "3 times a lady" is a love song. Now, when Lionel was still in the Commodores, they released "Just to be close to you", A SLOW JAM..sewhatimsayin? Here are some slow jams-Always & Forever, You are my starship, lady,'cause I love you, stairway to heaven, tonight is the night, reasons(live version)i just wanna be your girl...PLEASE DON"T GET ME STARTED!!!!!!!

Now, I agree with chuckie as far as wishing that there was a site that offered "one stop shopping". However, It seems that most old school rnb sites are 'snobbish" Why do i say snobbish? I don't know, there is just somthing about the playlist that seems, well, snobbish... It seems like the people that listen to these sites are the same people that woul "accept" rap in high scool, but were'nt really down...I prefer to hang with hip-hop heads...

As far as my man UnEq goes(you know, the big cheese) I give him the utmost due respect (even though he hate on my girl Shante) This site is cool, this site is free, this site is OLD SCHOOL LIVE, BABY!!!!!!!

Maybe, just maybe, if we keep asking, begging and pleading, we can have a friday or saturday night mix show...........

Now I'm all worked up, I gotta go make a mix tape

Ok, now that you/ve gotten all that off and I'm out of Fruit Loops, I see now that you're starting to feel me..Whay can't we have that One Stop shopping when It comes to the oldschool? Because Some of the rap sites are snobbish too or they just don't have it all.. I mean, I want to give you your sucker Dj(dimples D), give you your Just Buggin(whistle), go into your somebody's elses guy(Barbara Mason), then move you into your Moments In Love (Art of noise) which is the true Bump and grind song from back in the day, and then when you thought you'd had enogh, I'd hit you with some gentle(frederick)(you don't know nuttin bout that..lol) but I'd come back with some you bring me joy(my wife Anita Baker(jones) just cause there's no party without her, and then get it going againg with some you and I("Slick Rick" (RJ)...

That's the kinda oldschool i want.. with a request line to match everyone's intersets. and just to make everybody (other sites) Do a specific night of the week, ie. Go-Go Friday, Block party Saturday, easy like Sunday, Madness monday, Where I play only songs that relate to that day's theme, and even let the audience pick the theme...Man, I'm gonna need a bigger harddrive....But that's it, So now, What do I do??? I'm waiting to see who alse has something to say about this, while I go top off my kool-aid(grape) and grab me a bag of BBQ corn chips and dip...Holla back Peeps!!

Well for me and I am going to touch off summer time, old school is waking up on that Saturday morning and cleaning the house with that stero playing some Staples Singers, Stevie, Marvin Gaye, having the hous smelling like Pine Sol, Lemon furniture polish. Vibrant colors played a factor in me remembering old school, like after you finished with your chores (and you know couldn't go out until they were done) you go outside with your bike and all the kids in your neighborhood or friends had different color bikes like the green apple color, or bright red, or navy blue and they all had the speckles in the paint that when the sun hit it just right your shit shined. Or you go to the park because they had summer program going on and you go there to play kick ball, baseball, basketball, or make crafts then around noon the free lunch truck showed up to give free lunches. Or a group of friends would walk to the local swimming pool with your towel rolled up with your swim trunks in them, then after that you hit up the 50 cent movie threatre and every summer they had the old Batman and Robbin playing (you know the one where Batman was running on the docks with the bomb). The big family reuions, where you sitting on the steps with pops and he looks around to see if moms looking then he slips you a cup full of straight vodka once in while. Or when back then when they WHIPPED YOUR ASS! and not send you to the corner for acting out of line.

Aaaaah old school, yeah old school doesn't necessary have to involve the music, just memories that you have burned in your mind and make you smile every time you reflect back.

Well  being that this is hip hop board and if a person ask about old school and coming from a hip hop prospective your going to automatically think about Kool Herc, Busy Bee, Disco T, The Message, If I Ruled the World, etc. But I guess you can also look at what influenced hip hop like James Brown, Curtis, Roy Ayers, to name a few.

When someone mentions old school I immediatley think old school rap...I will admit. But there is alot of old school "other" music I love to listen to also... who couldn't listen to the ohio players "love rollercoaster",or "fire". Who couldn't listen to parliament...do you remember psycoalphadiscobetabioaquaduloop?...George Clinton, and what about Heatwave's "Boogie Nights"....ha, ha... now that's old school....but also don't forget Bill Whithers, Al green,Marvin, The Staple Singers "I'll take you there"....and the most sampled man ever...Mr. Dynamite Soul himself... James Brown....now old school also brings to mind some movies.....who remembers the "Willie Dynamite" movies.. who also later played "gordon" on sesame street....Pam Grier's "Foxy Brown"...and two of the biggest "Super Fly" and "The Mack"..."now those cats wore some serious threads man"....Big Shoes, and Big Collars....the ones that were so big ya' didn't have to pop'em.......if you wore one you were already "Big Pimp'n" ...

Aiight... you got me on the car wash.. I forgot who the chick was looking for in the movie...was it "Ace", or "Ali"?..I can't remember. The one thing that stands out in "Car Wash" to me is the "Waitress"  that the "fly" was trying to hook up with... now she was fine .....But since you mentioned car wash.... what about Redd Foxx in "Cotton comes to Harlem".... do y'all even remember that Laurence "Orpheus"  Fishburne was the little boy in the movie.... and who could forget..."Rodney Allen Rippy"........and who was one of the "coolest cats" ever...."Huggy Bear" from Starsky and Hutch...damn...I still call him Huggy Bear whenever I see him in something.... y'all be tak'n me wayyy back.....I'm about to break out the "platforms" and strut down main street.....
