In the days of old, there was a distinct battle in the styles of New York versus L.A.
Usually the big apple got the edge on the west coast style and rappers... well this is just my opinion. NY concentrated on the actual content and style of rapping where west coast was more technical ie electro.
Being a new member of the old skool posse, on this forum I thought I would coz a bit of banter by throwing up this question to the posse.
I've always been partial to the east side. I like aot of west coast artists, but I will admit that I'm more selective than I am with east coast artists..

Chill ghost, appreciate your reply in regards to the old skool battle of east and west, I have too admit that I appreciate both styles and enjoy both for each of their qualities but I am a bit of an electro fan, ie into any electric key synth.
EG , Kraftwerk, Unknown Dj, 2 Live, fav being world class wreckin cru -surgery. Egyptian lover, and the only track that i know from kid frost 'terminator' so i am biased in my thoughts.
I feel that west coast has gone all gangsta and forgotten its technical roots. My answer to this is that this was the only way for west coast to take up the east coast style without admitting it was east coast. This is only my view.
If someone in the west coast is brave enough to combine their gangsta style with old skool electro breaks. I think it would be hit.
What do you think?
Any way, its good to hear from ya all the way from the US.
How ya doin, I must admit that Im a big West Coast electro fan but now I prefer east coast. Gangsta style in the West coast should revisit its rootsand combine present with old styles.
Left a shout out. kept it short. Hope you understand the accent. If not I will speak more slowly and clearly.
I liked the west coast pre Gangsta era with all the electronic beats n stuff... My faves were Ice-T and King Tee. I wasn't too thrilled with Too Short but i did like his old song "Freaky Tales"

That montel song THis is How We do it......a song trying to pump up the West Coast using an East Coast Beat and taking East Coast lyrics.....That Dre song California...using an East Coast Beat ( used by EPMD) rapping about how great the west coast is...
to me....West coast has some very talented artists...but they have to rip from the east coast to try and represent themselves?
yo let's get real. Where did it start at? east coast. Where is it ending at? east coast. There's no east coast west coast; west coast is east coast because every thing they got they got it from us , east coast.end of story. Richdogg1
First of all, let me say that I was born and raised in L.A. Having said that, let's get it straight that NYC is the birthplace of hip-hop. I still remember being on the school bus in the 8th grade (yes I'm THAT old) and hearing rappers delight for the first time. From then on, all a brother had to do is say he was from NYC and he got instant juice. Now, here's the difference between east and west:B-boying (breaking) was east coast, while popping was west coast. That's why 'it's just begun' is a classic back east, while 'planet rock' is a classic out west. We stayed in that planet rock (techno-hop) for years. This was back in the nissan truck days, when EVERYBODY had a nissan truck! This was the begining of super-subs and 808 beats. L.A. is the birthplace of 'jeep beats'. Crenshaw blvd. was rockin sat and sun nights! This was also the heyday of the greatest hip-hop radio station ever, 1580 kday, ALL RAP, ALL THE TIME!!!! uncle jams army, dj aladdin, egyptian lover, pretty tony, rodney o and joe cooley, the l.a. dream team, jj fad, Ice t (do yall remember 'ya don't quit' ?) just to name a few. Eventually, there came a time when we stopped believing that we had to be 'legit', and gangsta rap began....How many of yall have ever heard 'panic zone', nwa's first record? It's straight techno-hop. I will end by quoting Rakim: "It ain't where your'e from, it's where your at"
i think the west really embraced the funk just like the south embraced bluess...and east with the jazz samples back then... but the point is what the music lead to during that time....with me it was bass music along with everything else and its all respected as originality in their own rights...
thats why i dont even say rap anymore its all hip hop in the sense of trying to be original in their own rights...thats why electro funk is still played around the country...its original and hold alot of memory old school heads..i know it does for me...
oh and about west embracing east coast..... east coast rappers wouldnt curse until 2 live came out with their first 2 lps along with 2 short and ghetto boys (your ass bet'not fall or imma make your ass read these nikes) many others not from up north...then you found yourself behind the ball when death row came out...then all of a sudden ONYX IS HARDCORE...DMC RAPPING ABOUT THE AVE......REMEMBER DMC BEFORE THAT WAS TRYING TO "PAUSE" IN 91....GANGSTA RAP PUT THE EAST ON ITS BACK FOR A FEW YEARS UNTIL BAD BOY WAS DEVELOPED AND BIG WAS RAPPING PARTYING AND BULLSHIT...ALONG WITH AKINELYE... CMON NOW REMEMBER YOUR HISTORY..EVEN BLACK MOON IN 93 WAS RAPPING ABOUT BUCK'EM DOWN...SO WHO CONFORMED TO WHO IN THAT SENSE
